5.) Deer Valley is incapable of treating rank and file employees well
4.) Deer Valley doesn't honor its own rules
6.) Deer Valley is not concerned about disturbing the concert experience of patrons
If you live in Utah and enjoy the arts and haven't attended the Deer Valley Music Festival here, you're missing out! You can pay extra for reserved chair seats, but the best way to enjoy is on a blanket, with friends, and with your own picnic food.
2.) Deer Valley is incapable of accommodating people with disabilities
1.) Deer Valley treats its customers very poorly and unreasonably
Had a great time at the Deer Valley Festival. Listened to a variety of music from Disney animated movies.
Worst symphony experience of my life. I have a disability (identified under ADA) which causes me near constant physical pain and makes good days a preciously rarity. My boyfriend and I got tickets for the 1812 Overture, and until we got to Deer Valley we were having a good day. The venue has a seat height requirement of 9”, and with our Kelty loveseat our butts are maybe 7” off the ground so we figured we were fine. In the venue I could also see that a very large number of the chairs people brought were higher than ours. So we set up and waited for the show for 10 minutes in plain view of half a dozen staff twirling yardsticks. I headed to the bathroom and on my way overheard the supervisor saying he was sending "her" to check out a few chairs including "that double one", which I assumed meant our loveseat, but no one came over. Fifteen minutes later just as the symphony was starting a female employee comes to measure our chair. Instead of measuring from our butts to the ground she measures from the mid-support member instead, a stupid thing to do since chair designs vary wildly. When we objected she cited that as her supervisor's policy, that our chairs were not allowed, that we would have to check them with the resort, and move to the blanket seating area. My boyfriend asked if we could just move to the back of the amphitheater, some 15 feet away. She said no and that her supervisor already forced her to remove a woman from the back fence whose chair was "too high". At this point the patrons around us looked shocked and disgusted at how draconianly we were being treated. We asked to speak with her supervisor, she said we could but the bedraggled look on her face made it very clear he would be neither pleasant nor reasonable. I objected to checking the chair since it's expensive, but she assured me it would be secure during the show. I walked off very angry and my boyfriend checked the chair. At this point I was on the verge of tears, knowing I'd be in too much pain to sit through the concert on the ground and too upset to enjoy it anyways. We would have to go home, and so what could have been a good day was made into a very bad day by Deer Valley staff. I was heartbroken. I told my boyfriend we had to leave so we headed for the exit, and I took note of how at least a third of the audience was in taller chairs, including the rented Deer Valley chairs and a man sitting in a full height camp chair (14” seat height) right in front of the supervisor. We had been singled out and our date ruined for God knows what reason. When we got to the checking kiosk no one was there. There were a dozen confiscated camp chairs lined up with no one manning the kiosk and not a single employee within 30 ft watching them for several minutes, and I took a photo of its vacancy. My boyfriend had to go looking for someone to check us out. Funny enough, it was the same girl whom the supervisor had running around checking seat heights (while a half dozen other employees stood around in the amphitheater doing nothing) who was manning the kiosk too. Oh my, my property sure was secure in the open outside the venue right next to the parking lot with no one watching it!
3.) Deer Valley doesn't care about protecting customer property from theft
Great views of the mountains. Get there early because half of the audience can't see the stage.
Bring something comfortable to sit on and some warm clothes. It gets pretty chilly as soon as it gets dark.
Conclusions:
I frequent the Utah Symphony at Abravanel Hall and we have never been mistreated there. I thought that Deer Valley would give us a wonderful date but apparently they couldn't be bothered. I was considering Deer Valley as our wedding venue, to the tune of a $50k expenditure, but it looks like Canyons is a better fit for our business. I wouldn't inflict this staff on any guest of mine. I will never come back here again. Visiting Deer Valley is beneath my dignity.
